Maps

2018. Various sculptures and arcane objects.

These three “memory maps” all reference real places of significance to me, but are recorded in a purposefully elusive code so as to avoid comprehension by anyone but the mapmaker. These sculptures play with language, history and monuments, calling into question what kinds of spaces are deemed worthy of recording, and who is allowed to access the path to get there.

Dream Archetype Stele, 2017. 1′ x 1′ x 5′. Plaster, pigment, fake blood, secret. code.

This large plaster sculpture was designed to resemble a stele, but instead of serving as a monument to ancient civilizations, it documents the settings of several recurring dreams I have. I created a code, the same code present in my previous map-making works, and gave the audience a purposefully miselading key, not meant to give them any real hints to decipher the map. The stele represents a breakdown between dream space and waking life, as well as a lapse in understanding of language and code.
