Seto’s Grave

2025. Digital video and audio. 11 minutes.

Still from Seto’s Grave.

Still from Seto’s Grave.

I recently learned that my paternal great-grandfather is buried not in Southern China, where I thought he had lived all his life, but instead is buried in Hong Kong. This 11 minute video documents the process of me attempting to find his grave with extremely little information to go on. The opacity of my own knowledge, barred by memories lost in immigration and language differences, is mirrored in the limited imagery the audience is allowed to experience. An internal monologue appears as a caption track, inviting viewers to join the search as well.
